It is very important a new tattoo be taken care of properly in the first few weeks. If not, it will not look as good as it should over time or worse could develop into an infection.
1. It is a little late for this first tip-but it is important. Hopefully you have selected a good tattoo artist. One that is professional, safe and knows what they are doing. A good tattoo artist will be less likely to damage your skin as much as other less experiences tattoo artists will. The less damage done the better and faster it will heal.
2. You now have a new wound. Sure you allowed this wound to be inflicted upon you voluntarily-but it is still a wound that needs to be cared for properly. The main objective tattoo aftercare is to help it heal quickly, to keep it from becoming infected, and to prevent the loss of ink in a whole variety of ways we will cover.
3. Leave the bandage covering your new tattoo on for at least 2 hours or even over night. It is not uncommon for a new tattoo to ooze and you can lose ink on your bed sheets.
4. Hopefully you have gone to a good tattoo artist and they have not covered your new tattoo with clear plastic or cellophane. This is sometimes done by people that are not the most professional and it is very bad. You want the bandage to breath. Cellophane does not breathe and turns your new wound into a warm, moist breeding ground for infection to begin. Sure it allows you to see your new tattoo-but because of the harm it can cause, don’t allow this. You can wait a few hours to see your tattoo. You will be looking at it for the rest of your life-so waiting a couple of hours won’t kill you.
5. It is not uncommon for there to be a little oozing with the new tattoo. It is for this reason that when you remove the bandage you will want to wash the area gently. Use a mild soap with warm, not hot, water with a mild soap. If the bandage feels like it has stuck to the tattoo, soak it before removing. Don’t yank the bandage off, remove it gently.
6. Don’t let the tattoo stay wet for very long. Water in excess and a new tattoo are not friends in the first few weeks. To dry, pat the tattoo don’t rub.
7. Now you need to keep the new tattoo moist with a good moisturizing product. Here is where you find the most disagreement on new tattoo care. Some say use only moisturizing lotions, some say use anti bacterial ointments like A&D ointment or Bacitracin. It is pretty unanimous to NOT use Neosporin. There is no infection yet and this product might cause an allergic reaction. As well, what ever you use it should not contain any fragrance or color. Vaseline intensive care lotion, Jergens, Nivea and Lubriederm are all good brand name products. Our advice is to use the moisturizer or ointment that was recommended by your tattoo artist. The reason: they may not agree to do any touch up work (if needed) if you did not follow their specific instructions.
8. It is very important now to keep your new tattoo moist. As soon as it starts to feel like it is drying out, that’s the time to reapply the tattoo care moisturizer.
9. You will want to keep your new tattoo moist for the next 7-10 days reapplying as often as is necessary, until the wound is healed.
10. As the tattoo heals it will itch as any wound would. Try to resist itching the tattoo. If it itches slap it. Applying your moisturizer can also reduce the itching.
11. You will want to avoid getting the tattoo very wet for the next three weeks or so. Sure you can still shower-just no soaking in a bath tub. No swimming, no hot tubing or anything similar for the next 3 weeks.
12. For the next few weeks also you need to keep your new tattoo out away from the sun. Some of the colors could react in a negative way and you have to worry about premature fading. So just stay out of the sun for a while.
13. After the tattoo is healed you will want to put a high SPF sunblock on it, a tleast 30 SPF or higher. Doing so will help keep your tattoo colors vibrant for many years.
14. If during the healing process the tattoo scab, this is normal. Let’s be clear here, a little scabbing is normal. Too much scabbing is usually an indication of a poorly applied tattoo. A big scab could be a problem in that when it comes of it very likely will remove ink with it and you don’t want that. Don’t scratch or try to remove the scab. Let it come off naturally. Applying your moisturizer on the scab is okay.
15. One last note: After receiving your tattoo you should have been give care instruction by the tattoo artist.
